This is the official State of New Mexico website for the Fort Stanton Historic Site. Fort Stanton started as a military post in 1855, taken by the Confederacy in 1861, was a part of the Lincoln County War, abandoned by the military in 1899, served as a merchant marine sanitorium, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp, a German prisoner of war camp, a State of New Mexico sanitorium and now as a living history site.
